A new mental health support service for NHS staff dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic has received over 300 referrals since its launch last September.
The service which is operated by Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Foundation Trust (CPFT) is accessible for all NHS staff working between acute and community settings, including mental health and social care.
The Staff Mental Health Service (SMHS) offers a multidisciplinary approach which includes rapid psychiatric assessments and treatments along with psychological therapies and personalised occupational health support.
The service is accessible either via a referral from their GP or via their NHS Trust occupational health service. Once a referral has been received by the service, contact is made within 3 working days to offer a suitably convenient time for a flexible appointment. These can be either in person or online and includes both evenings and weekends to accommodate working patterns. The service is available to staff within the following Trusts:
The Staff Mental Health Services is funded by the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Integrated Care System (ICS), which is a new partnership between both local health and care organisations.
Dr Cathy Walsh, CPFT Deputy Medical Director and Project Lead told a recent interview; ‘We know that NHS staff have faced unprecedented demands due to the coronavirus pandemic. Services like the Staff Mental Health Service, with integrated occupational health support, have always been needed but are particularly critical at this time to provide rapid health to staff who may be experiencing severe anxiety and distress.
‘Covid-19 has been unusual in terms fo the scale and duration of the pandemic and the pressures staff are dealing with’.
‘Looking after the mental health of our NHS Trust colleagues in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough will build resilience for teams responding to crisis situations now, and in the future.’
