What are your first thoughts when you hear the words ‘peace’ or ‘pleasure’? For some, the words may be associated with each other even possibly used interchangeably, but in reality, there is a very distinct difference as observed by Jay Shetty.
Sir Simon Stevens, chief executive of NHS England advised the BBC in a recent interview that around 140 people per minute were now receiving their first Covid-19 vaccination as part of the mass rollout.
This number is set to increase as a further 10 mass vaccination centres open their doors this week and the introduction of community pharmacy teams joining the fight against Coronavirus.
As infection numbers seem to be slowly declining, there are still many more hospital in-patients receiving Covid-19 related care than those in the first peak back in April 2020. The increase in patients receiving hospital care has increased by 75%, with around a 50% increase in the need for critical care beds for Covid patients. Last week’s seven-day average saw 35,882 patients in hospital with Coronavirus.
In his recent interview with Andrew Marr, Sir Stevens advised that some hospitals would endeavour a trial of offering vaccinations 24 hours a day, 7 days per week within the next 10 days. Healthcare professionals have stressed that these out of hours vaccinations would not be offered to vulnerable older patients, but more so aimed at frontline shift workers.
Figures last week suggested that half of all the over 80’s had now received their first vaccinations with the clinically vulnerable to start receiving their first vaccinations this week. The Health Secretary, Matt Hancock stated that; ‘Each jab brings us one step closer to normal.’ It comes as new figures suggest that more people have now received their first vaccination as opposed to those receiving a positive test result since the beginning of the pandemic.
When asked if the NHS would be able to maintain daily vaccination levels, Sir Stevens advised that it would only be possible ‘if people continue to do the right thing and prevent the transmission of Coronavirus.’ This echoes the previous advice given by England’s chief medical officer, Prof. Chris Whitty, who has said that ‘Vaccines give clear hope for the future, but now we must all stay at home, protect the NHS and save lives.’
