Seven new mass vaccination centres will be opening their doors for the first time this week, in the fight against time with the roll out of Covid-19 vaccinations.
In addition, hundreds more GP-led and hospital services will also joining the effort in the nation’s biggest vaccination programme in NHS history.
The seven new centres are located across the country and include:
NHS England advised that ‘dozens more’ large-scale sites will be added to the already unprecedented efforts, which will be capable of delivering thousands of vaccinations each week.
The Government-set target to vaccinate 15 million people in the UK will include the over 70’s, medically vulnerable individuals shielding and healthcare workers by mid-February.
Letters will be sent out to those most vulnerable asking them to make an appointment; however, some have questioned the practicality in driving miles away from home to receive a vaccination from one of the new mass-vaccination centres. The NHS has advised that those with concerns will not miss out from receiving their vaccination, with local community services also playing a vital role in the vaccination roll out.
The Health Secretary, Matt Hancock, told BBC news in a recent interview that around two million people in the UK had already received their first vaccination with around 200,000 vaccinations being delivered daily in England; describing them as the ‘keystone of our exit out of the pandemic’.
With infections rates continuing to increase along with hospital admissions and deaths, Prof. Chris Whitty, the Chief Medical Officer advised that; ‘The news few weeks are going to be the worst weeks of the pandemic in terms of numbers into the NHS’, adding that it would take ‘several weeks’ before the effect of the vaccination programme would be seen.
